President's Report

Last year with the COVID Public Health Emergency, as President of APIC Chicago I made the decision to put our APIC Chicago plans on hold to allow all of the APIC volunteers to deal with work and personal priorities.  I apologize for not notifying the membership at that time.  I and the APIC Chicago Board know that you pay for and deserve to have a robust local professional organization that provides service to its members.  I apologize that we were not able to do that in 2020 and want you to know that we are working to determine how to stop charging dues for a 1 year period so that everyone can have a year without paying local dues..

In January 2021 the Board began meeting again and all but one member agreed to serve this year in lieu of last year and you can expect to have an election and transition to a new Board next year.  The Board and Education Committee meet the second Wednesday of the month at 5:30 PM and any member is welcome to attend.  The Zoom invites are posted on our APIC Chicago Calendar.  You can see a list of current Board members on the APIC Chicago website.  We are working to get Minutes for 2019 and this year posted on the APIC website as well as an updated copy of the by-laws that were approved by membership at the November 2019 meeting..

We have had some technical issues that we have had to address as a new Board, but I am happy to report that many of those are in process of being resolved.

  • Asra Salim, an IP with amazing technical skills has agreed to continue as our webmaster and is working on updating the APIC Chicago Website.
  • We have also updated our StarChapter subscription and will be sending out future notification through this system to your preferred email address (so please unblock as a contact and update your preferred email address on the APIC National Membership page).
  • The transition of Treasurers is in progress but may require paying for replacement keys to the APIC Chicago PO Box.
  • As a Board, we made the decision that the chapter would no longer pay for National Conference registration for the APIC Board. Instead we will work to create a lottery that will afford all members, including the Board, an opportunity to win a chance to have their APIC National Conference registration reimbursed.

Alina Stancovici, our education director, has done an amazing job retaining and recruiting an amazing group of hardworking members for the education committee.  We hope that everyone (members and non-members) will participate in a needs assessment that this group has created - please complete the survey by clicking HERE.  Completing the needs assessment will enter you in a chance to win a year of APIC National dues!   The education committee has added learning opportunities to the APIC Chicago calendar and has also begun planning a virtual conference for this summer and one for the fall - so please check the calendar and watch your e-mail for updates!

Please feel free to reach out with questions or concerns (or just join us during a Board meeting).  Our chapter is only as strong as our member volunteers – so please PARTICIPATE!

Here’s to an ever improving 2021,

Sylvia Garcia-Houchins

APIC Chicago President
